Police dogs save lives. They train extensively with their handlers and develop an intense bond. It is because of this bond that the dog serves the handler and the public so faithfully. While in police service, the city covers all medical costs that the dog incurs.
Like police officers, police dogs retire. When police dogs retire they retain their life’s training and their bond with their handler. Because of that, the dog is sold to the handler and goes on to live with the handler after retirement. However, medical costs fall to the handler after retirement.
The K9 Retirement Fund was established to support handlers of retired police dogs in the event that their retired partner requires significant medical expense. Just as with their human counterparts, police dogs are highly physically taxed by policework. Chronic conditions and surgeries represent staggering financial cost to their families. This fund ensures the dog’s ongoing health and comfort.
Please consider a donation today to support these exceptional animals as thanks for their service to our community.
